Introduced Species: Harmless or Armed Invaders?

Database Activity

  1. Go the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) database and search on the common name "brown anole" in the Animal kingdom. Write down the scientific (Genus species) names. One is labeled valid, but you may find data listed under invalid names as well.

  2. Go to the Herpetology database at the Florida Museum of Natural History. Type in the Genus and Species names in the appropriate boxes and restrict retrieval to Florida specimens by typing Florida in the text box labeled "State or Department." Then click on "Query database." Are there any records from your county? ____Yes ____No _____________________County.
  3. Because there are over 700 records for the brown anole,an Excel spreadsheet has been created for your use. It is available at http://palmm.fcla.edu/lfnh/currmat/xls/Anole_final.xls. Open the spreadsheet. On the Florida map (part of this lesson), write the years it was collected in each county.  If multiple records occur, write the year only once.

    Briefly describe its spread throughout Florida:

  4. Look up the brown anole at http://www.enature.com to see what it looks like and to get more information about it. Answer the following questions:
    • What does it look like?
    • What does it eat?
    • In what kind of habitat does it live?
    • How was it introduced?
    • From where did it come (what country or part of the world)?
    • How does it spread?
    • Can you think of another way it might spread?
