As a follow-up to the July 1999 workshop Finding Common Ground and the May 2000 workshop Z39.50 in Museums, this workshop will explore georeferencing biological data in Florida. Challenges lie at the intersection of library science, mapping science, biological sciences, and data stewardship. Individuals involved in metadata creation, geobibliographies, GIS, and specimen collections will present overviews of their own fields and identify biological georeferencing activities and issues in Florida. Current Florida conventions for place names, standardized georeferenced codes (e.g. HUCs, FIPs, estuaries etc.), and GIS standards will be covered. Research and operational problem areas will be identified, and possible solutions will be discussed with action items to be determined.
The objectives of the workshop are to:
1. Identify the georeferencing parameters
for particular disciplines.
2. Discuss existing conventions and their
applicability to particular disciplines.
3. Discuss the interoperability of conventions
across disciplines.
4. Determine geographic areas that are problematic,
e.g. Gulf of Mexico or Lake Wales Ridge.
5. Discuss classification schemes for biological
data.
6. Discuss keyword and thesaurus conventions
for biological data.
7. Formulate action items to create an agreed-upon
list of geographical conventions, which can be used for multiple biological
projects.
