Tasks, Responsibilities, and Timeline related to the the Mission of the Florida Biotic Information Consoritium

[These tasks are related to the Mission and goals of the Florida Biotic Information Consortium as redefined at the Georeferencing Florida workshop, August 23-34, 2000, Florida Marine Research Institute, St. Petersburg, FL]

Tasks Responsibilies Timeline
1. Define field(s) to represent geospatial accuracy/confidence of:
   Collector identified locations
   Interpretation of legacy locations
2. Define field(s) to express "intended use" of data (scale)
3. Delineate best practices/standards for populating geospatial fields to be used across metadata formats, e.g., GNIS Lat/Long in decimal degrees

Lead: Kent Perkins
Members: Joe Aufmuth, Mary Ann O'Daniels, Wayne King, David Stage, Ramon Ruiz-Carus
Draft:
Dec. 2000
Create a Florida Digital Gazetteer (modeled on Alexandria Digital Project) to provide an authority for Florida place names linked to spatial attributes.
1. Use GNIS data as core  (limited to centroid point)
2. Pilot using South Florida Ecosystem data  (Currently funded by USGS)
3. Develop a Web form to permit distributed input from participants

Lead: Gail Clement
Members: Jill Trubey, David Stage
Consultants: Tom Moritz and Susan Rappaport, AMNH, New York (will supply Florida place names from AMNH records)
Web Draft or pilot for review:
Aug.2000
Identify robust search engine to handle geospatial queries across multiple metadata formats, e.g., FGDC, MARC, Darwin Core, etc.  Specify functionality needed.

Create a demonstration project integrating FGDC format using Z39.50 interface developed as part of the "Linking Florida's Natural Heritage" grant
